ChatGPT is among us and is planning to stay for an indefinite time. In adult learning, ChatGPT has proven to be a helpful resource for immediate assistance in personal inquiries about various topics, obtaining feedback on written content, and aiding with grammar and spelling. These areas are particularly helpful when using ChatGPT. In the realm of self-directed learning (SDL), ChatGPT can help establish personal learning goals with the assisted technology integrated into this AI tool. By providing critical details on learning objectives, personal skills and challenges, and desired outcomes, ChatGPT can help individuals design a complete plan to reach their personal goals.
The above is just an example of the capabilities of advanced chatbot technology in the context of lifelong and self-directed learning (LDS). In the article "Exploring the Role of ChatGPT as a Facilitator for Motivating Self-Directed Learning Among Adult Learners" (Lin, 2023), the author provides an overview of the advantages ChatGPT can offer for adult learning if its technological features are used efficiently and with integrity.
If we compare ChatGPT to other recent advances in technology and communications, we could say that ChatGPT is an advanced version of Wikipedia in the sense that it provides users with information on most topics for free. However, what is stated in it should not be taken as an absolute truth, and learners should not use the content as it appears on screen and present it as original. Undoubtedly, ChatGPT offers a more complex layer of interactivity and information than Wikipedia; my point is that we should not shy away from taking advantage of what is already available, as it can help us improve productivity and the quality of results, always practicing integrity.
Self-learning comes with many challenges; one of those is setting goals that are realistic in a specific time frame, as well as being consistent. In Lin's article (2023), it is mentioned that effective goal setting should incorporate the following: be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound, or what they call SMART (2023). Each description of the acronym SMART makes complete sense to me, as I acknowledge that learning is a process, and processes take time, patience, and dedication. However, integrating this into SDL is something that I need to understand better before jumping to personal conclusions and theories on how to effectively implement those into adult learning practices.
I am personally interested in training and development for corporate environments, and it is clear to me that to stay current and provide trainees with optimal learning experiences, it is crucial to incorporate emerging technologies into traditional teaching practices to foster knowledge retention and engagement among learners. There is still much I need to learn about how to balance the advantages that AI technologies offer, like ChatGPT, and the organic input from the learner's part to motivate more active participation in the knowledge acquisition process instead of letting technologies do everything for us.
We are only witnessing the capabilities of AI and related products in learning and development, which is why I am curious to see what the future holds for the instructional design world and, overall, for adult learning. The article mentioned in this blog has inspired me to dive deeper into learning about the implications of AI in SDL and to think more consciously about how SMART is reflected in my learning, to later put it into practice in a corporate training scenario or similar.
