Method of Loci First Impressions

Using the method of Loci for creating mental representations of complex concepts or a series of objects appears to be a positive strategy to enhance visual memory. In e-Learning, for instance, studies have proven that when words are accompanied by multimedia elements like pictures and audio, the learning experience is enhanced (Domagk et al., 2010). Thus, I can argue that knowledge retention and memory can be improved by making the method of Loci a daily practice.

It sounded easier to read about the method of Loci than practice it, and to master its implementation, concentration, and consistency are a must. Honestly, I did not have the first best impression practicing this method. Following the directions indicated in the course module, first, I tried to mentally navigate through a familiar physical space as I moved in the areas I created in the mental map of my little apartment. This first part of this process was easy to perform as long as I kept distractions out of my way. However, the challenge appeared when I added elements (e.g., goals and objectives, people) that did not exist in the real space. I consider myself an excellent visual learner and have no issues recreating spaces in my mind; however, it is difficult for me to have some connection with unrealistic things.
So, for me, memory is enhanced when a sensory experience is tied to the memory/event, which is why I do not find the method of Loci suitable to my learning style. Furthermore, this method adds to my cognitive load as I need to imagine more nonexistent things in real spaces. Also, I found the descriptions in the activity quite confusing and a bit overwhelming due to the many elements added to them. However, despite not having a first remarkable personal experience with the method of Loci, I believe that the effectiveness of this method to enhance memory is debatable in a way that learning styles differ from person to person.
An effective way to implement the method of Loci into learning material could be by designing activities that integrate multimedia content when discussing complex topics. For example, complementing a reading with a voiceover or audio recording so that a student can mentally recreate the happenings from the narration and connect them with concepts learned from reading. We can also add images with distinctive characteristics relevant to a topic to make the learning experience engaging and memorable. Then, the student would have to decide how to translate the acquired learned concepts into their own mental map.
All in all, I would like to say that the method of Loci can be a helpful tool to store more information in long-term memory by associating locations with concepts. However, its effectiveness would also depend on the frequency of practice and the subjective approach of each individual.
